REGISTER NOW:  PROVIDING TRANS-AFFIRMING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES — OCTOBER 20, 2017

Our next workshop is entitled:  “Providing Trans-Affirming Mental Health Services”.  Our presenter is Jennifer Evans, Psy.D.

Presenter:

Dr. Evans published her dissertation on the topic of    genderqueer identity and has attended trainings and conferences in various cities across the U.S that focus on transgender clients. Throughout her career she has received supervision and sought consultation regarding the provision of therapy to transgender clients, and has worked with transgender clients in individual and group therapy since 2005. Dr. Evans has provided over twenty presentations on the topic and is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the organization that sets forth the standards of care for medical and mental health professionals providing services to transgender populations. Dr. Evans helped with program evaluation and implementation of a queer mentorship program at San Jose State University, and played an integral role in the creation of the University of Central Florida Safe Zone program. Dr. Evans is currently the interim vice president of TranQuility (a local organization that provides social support to transgender people and their allies in the Gainesville area).

Abstract:

This training will include information about terminology related to gender expansiveness, including gender identity, gender expression, and other gender-related concepts. Statistical information will be provided regarding the mental health of transgender clients, and discussion will be had about the impact of social support (including family support) on transgender well-being. Attendees will learn how to implement strategies to create a more affirming and culturally-sensitive environment for  transgender clients.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss gender identity, gender expression, and other gender-related concepts more comfortably.
  2. Identify the impact that social support (especially family) can have on the mental health of transgender people.
  3. Apply strategies to create a more affirming and culturally sensitive environment for clients who identify as transgender, gender nonconforming, gender expansive, gender-diverse, or who are questioning their gender identity.
